BEAUMARIS

After crossing the Menai Bridge if you turn right and follow the road along the Menai Straits you come to Beaumaris. This has in the past been an important town in the life of Anglesey and has many interesting things for the visitor to see. Not least of these is Beaumaris castle its self.

The castle was the last of the fortresses built round North Wales by Edward 1 to subdue the Welsh. It was uncompleted due to lack of funds. Even so once inside it is obvious that it was meant to be a formidable defensive site. It is now a World Heritage Site.

Opposite the castle is the courthouse dated 1614 and still in use. The nearby Victorian gaol was ahead of its time with running water and toilets.

Also worth a visit is the Museum of Childhood and Marine World.

Noteworthy among the towns buildings are Ye Olde Bull's Head, the Tudor Rose (one of Wales's oldest houses), and the 14th-century church containing the coffin of Llywelyn the Great's wife.
